The Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk

Today's weather forecast was for showers but we still headed down to the new Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk.

It is a short 1 1/2 hour drive from Sydney but a traffic accident on the Sydney to Wollongong freeway added an extra 30 minutes to the trip.

The walkway itself is located between Robertson in the Southern Highlands and Jamberoo in The Illawarra. It has spectacular views over the Illawarra and the walk among the tree tops is a wonderful to get up close and personal with nature without disturbing it.

And of course you can relax at the end at the cafe for coffee and a bite to eat.

Some interesting facts about the walkway:

  • The Treetop Walk is 500 metres long with an average height of 25 metres
  • Knights Tower is 45 metres high
  • The Treetop walk has a 280km/hr wind speed design
  • The cantilevers can hold a maximum weight of 28 tonne or 800 wombats!!
  • The Treetop Walk holds an average of 400kg/m2
If you have time make a short diversion on the way to check out the Carrington Falls. One good thing with the rain there was sufficient water to make a respectable waterfall.

If you want an extended stay in the region check out the accommodation in the region

Off to Vegas

Rainbow Mark is flying in from SYD and Rainbow Dee is winging her way from PDX. Hello Vegas. Hello Bette Midler, Hello Lake Mead.
We've been invited to attend the 25th Anniversary Convention of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association - Dee as Charter Member and Director Emeritus and Mark as Ambassador for Australia.

It will be full-on five days of meetings, trade shows, networking, Pride activities and rendezvousing with friends unseen for many years of separation.

Just in case there's time, I brushed up on my BlackJack game this week with ace dealer Melanie Love. Ciao, Dee

Airplane Read of the Month

I know what I'll be reading as I head to Sin City (Las Vegas) at the end of the month for the 25th Anniversary convention of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association.

Among the guest speakers at the meeting of 325 travel professionals is the author of the new book "Gay and Lesbian Tourism: the Essential Guide for Marketing." Jeff Guaracino just happens to be from my hometown of Philadelphia (AKA The City of Brotherly Love. Uh huh.).

His landmark campaign was called Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay, which instigated major gay tourism increases in Philly and inspired other cities to initiate efforts to provide a welcoming environment for GLBT visitors.

Some of the anecdotes may help readers make new travel choices and also help us all understand the courting techniques being practiced on us by destinations and travel businesses.

Be a savvy traveler. Read this book before you plan your next trip.

PS RainbowTourism.com is the IGLTA Ambassador for Australia and New Zealand and will be attending the Vegas confab. If you live in the area, be sure to drop by the Travel Expo on Sat. May 3 to get vacation planning brochures and destination information.

Western Hemisphere Visitors to Australia Climbs

No surprise, the three largest sources of Australian visitors...UK, New Zealand, and USA. They have led the charts for past three years. Also starting to arrive downunder are more and more Germans, Canadians, and Middle Easterners/Africans.

It's only far the first time. Have you thought of Australia for your next holiday? Come on down and plant your country's flag!

Sunshine Coast - Get off the beaten track ex Pomona

Noosa Avalon Cottages was an accidental find when Mark and I toured the Sunshine Coast...and still dear to our hearts. Linda was a delightful host and showed us around her farm.

Pomona is growing as a destination, so there's a lot more to do and places to eat than when we passed through two years ago. But the beauty of the place is that you can do nothing and listen to silence, sit on the veranda sipping complimentary wine or bubbly and enjoy a lovely night beneath the stars in this delightful eyrie.

Specials for April
Book 3 nights and get the 4th FREE
Stay 2 nights and receive free wine and homemade goodies

The 2008 rate is $150 per couple per night.
